The play space is restricted, increase it by supplying the command centre with items

Zoom in/out middle mouse scroll
Place LMB
Destroy RMB
Rotate Machine R
Switch machine placement Q/E
Toggle conveyor placement C

(note: conveyors can't be destroyed yet, but can be placed over, this can be circumvented by placing a building on the conveyor then breaking it)
